I have used the franchise for sermons in two churches. A 6 part series in one church that was well received and seen for what it was, a way to talk about good and evil, and discipleship and a single sermon that received some criticism as glorifying sorcery, and perhaps being a bad influence for children in church to hear.

Perhaps Jesus was writing something to the effect of “don’t use God” when the woman trapped by religious leaders was brought to Jesus for a ruling re: adultery’s consequences.

I’ve been careful during worship to use only clips that are non-scary and family friendly. And never to name “the one whose name should not be said.” It’s giving us all something to think about and it has been an easy loop to the scriptural base.
